Horticulture has emerged as an indispensable part of agriculture, by providing a wide range of choices to farmers for crop diversification. Adoption of horticulture by small and marginal farmers has stabilized their income. It plays a vital role in the country’s nutritional security, poverty alleviation and employment generation. Horticulture has invariably improved the economic status of our farmers.
The pioneer College of Horticulture, Mudigere in the state offers Under Graduation program since two and half decades and Post Graduation courses. The intake capacity is 65 for UG {through Common Entrance Test (CET) 54 conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) Government of Karnataka, ICAR-08 and Lateral entry for diploma 03} and 32 PG students through CET conducted by farm Universities excluding ICAR quota. Our college truly is one of the best Colleges of horticulture in the country and leader in the state for horticulture education. Our students feel at home here and with the help of very good faculty, become good leaders of any organizations. The preparation our students receive not only makes them leaders in their chosen fields, but also in society.
Our College has recorded 26 years of excellence in horticultural research, education and extension. The College founded in 1991, includes five major horticultural departments viz., Department of Floriculture & Landscape Architecture, Fruit Science, Vegetable Science, Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops and Postharvest Technology besides the three allied and supporting departments viz., Plant Protection, Biotechnology and Crop Improvement and Natural Resource Management.

Genesis/History
- Sc. (Hort.) degree programme was started for the first time in the country during 1972 under UAS, Bengaluru and elevated to the status of the Division in 1976.
- Keeping in view the ruralisation of un0dergraduate (UG) degree programme in the State, the degree programme in Horticulture was shifted to Mudigere, Chikkamagaluru District by establishing a College of Horticulture on 9th December 1991.
- The nomenclature of B.Sc. Horticulture has been changed to B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture as per the recommendations of V Dean’s Committee.
- The College also started post graduate degree programme (M.Sc. Horticulture) during the academic year 2010-11 in three disciplines Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops and Fruit Science, followed by Vegetable Science during the year 2013-14.
- Now the College is a premier institution in the state for imparting quality education and conduct research in horticulture.

Growth of the Institution
Karnataka with its varying agro-climatic conditions is richly endowed with horticultural wealth. In recent years, Horticultural crops are gaining lot of importance for their high productivity and economic returns than field crops. Out of 191 lakh hectares of geographical area in the state 138.3 lakh hectare is under cultivation. Horticulture crops occupies about 27.14 lakh hectare (NHB, 2022-23) which accounts 17.13 per cent of the total cultivated area (121.5 lakh ha). Karnataka has immense potential in the cultivation of majority of the horticultural crops comprising of fruits (4.22 lakh ha), vegetables (5.65 lakh ha), flower crops & plantation, spices, medicinal and aromatic crops (0.99 lakh ha) (NHB data base 2021-22).Among them, spices and plantations are the major traditional export oriented crops from the state and the country, which comprises 55.04 per cent of the total area under horticultural crops in the state. Several Central Research Institutes viz., ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, ICAR-Directorate of Cashew, Puttur, ICAR-Central Plantation Crop Research Institute, Regional Centre Kidu, Vittla, Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops Regional Station, Bengaluru, Boards (Coffee and Spices board), ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Regional Station, Appangala and Central Coffee Research Institute, Balehonnur were established in the state to address various production problems of the horticultural crops.
The degree programme in horticulture was started in 1972 at UAS, Bengaluru. Later the College of Horticulture was shifted to Mudigere, Chikkamagaluru District during 1991. This College was transferred to University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot during 2009. The College started PG programmes in 5 disciplines of Horticulture namely Fruit Science, Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, Floriculture and Landscaping, Vegetable Science and Post-Harvest Management. At present the College is now functioning under the administrative control of Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences (KSNUAHS), Shivamogga since 2013.
There is a vast scope for Horticulturists in public and private sectors. Hence, the College of Horticulture, Mudigere is contributing in a positive way to leverage the development of producing the necessary knowledge and skilled manpower.

Research & Extension
- Post Graduate students are encouraged to present in national and international seminar/ conferences. As many as six students have bagged national and two international best paper awards.
- Excellent performance of the graduates has led to signing of MoU with ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru and ICAR-CPCRI, Kasargod, CCRI, Balehonnur,CSIR-CFTRI, Mysuru and internationally reputed research institutions such as CIP, Peru.
- The research by PG students has contributed to considerable number of publications in peer reviewed international and national journals and presentation of the research work in national and international conferences.
- During the last five years, 66 PG students were assisted with University grant for conducting need based research in horticultural crops on following aspects.
- Collection and conservation of native orchids, medicinal plants, regeneration and mass multiplication of Rare, Endangered and Threatened (RET) species of Western Ghat Viz., Vanda thwatessii, Vanda testacea, Dendrobium jerodonianum, Rauvolfia serpentine etc
- Identification/ development of suitable minor tuber, fruits, flowers and vegetable crops.
- Standardization of production technologies for growing flowers and vegetables under protected and open condition.
- Value addition of minor fruits and vegetables.
- Use of growth regulators and nutrients to enhance yield and quality of horticulture crops
- Effective screening and management practices of pest and disease in horticulture crops

Extension activities by students during RHWE programme:
- Conducted 20 Horticulture exhibitions cum field days, where more than 25000 farmers were benefited.
- 40 crop seminars on different crops were conducted.
- 60 Method Demonstrations were conducted on various aspects of horticulture.
- Around 500 Group Discussion meetings were conducted on different areas of horticulture.
Extension activities by faculty:
Apart from RHWEP the faculty members also regularly participate in extension activities such as on and off-campus training, diagnostic field visits, demonstration, farm advisory services over phone, farm trials, radio talks, TV programmes, Krishimelas, Bi and tri-monthly workshops, zonal workshops etc.
- 15 short-term training programmes were conducted.
- Delivered 77 Radio/TV talks on various issues of horticultural aspects.
- Provided 2800 Agro-Advisory Services.
- Organized 22 seminar/webinars for the benefit of farming community.
