Horticulture crops occupies about 27.14 lakh hectare (NHB, 2022-23) which accounts 17.13 per cent of the total cultivated area (121.5 lakh ha). Karnataka has immense potential in the cultivation of majority of the horticultural crops comprising of fruits (4.22 lakh ha), vegetables (5.65 lakh ha), flower crops & plantation, spices, medicinal and aromatic crops (0.99 lakh ha) (NHB data base 2021-22).Among them, spices and plantations are the major traditional export oriented crops from the state and the country, which comprises 55.04 per cent of the total area under horticultural crops in the state. Several Central Research Institutes viz., ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, ICAR-Directorate of Cashew, Puttur, ICAR-Central Plantation Crop Research Institute, Regional Centre Kidu, Vittla, Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops Regional Station, Bengaluru, Boards (Coffee and Spices board), ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Regional Station, Appangala and Central Coffee Research Institute, Balehonnur were established in the state to address  various production problems of the horticultural crops.
