Vegetable Science

The Department of Vegetable Science at College of Horticulture has been offering Vegetable Science courses to under graduate students since its establishment in the year 1991-92. Realizing the importance of vegetables for providing nutritional security and health security of the country in general and of the state in particular, sensed the need of quality human resource development in this field. As a result of which post graduate programme in Vegetable Science commenced form the academic year 2013-14. The faculty members of the Department are mainly involved in teaching besides research & extension activities
- To impart postgraduate education and training for human resource development.
- To conduct applied and strategic research on improvement of vegetable crops.
- To disseminate information on recent advances in vegetable crop production technology to the farmers.
- To provide advisory and consultancy services on protected cultivation and seed production of vegetable crops.
- To collect, evaluate, purify and preserve the germplasm related to different vegetable crops and to utilize the desirable superior genotypes in the breeding programme.
To be a premier vegetables science department by developing quality man power.
To conduct need based location specific research to develop technologies and to disseminate these technologies to the farmers and industry with a view to improve the productivity and economy.

Entomology

The Department of Entomology was established at the College of Horticulture to impart knowledge on the world of insects to undergraduate students from the year 1990-91. In addition to undergraduate programme, the necessity for mastering the Entomological science in the field of Horticulture was also felt and hence the Post Graduate programme in the field of Entomology was started from the year 2010-11.
Presently the department is having strength of two teachers, Mr. Syed Imran and Dr. M.H. Suchithra Kumari.
The prime importance is given to teaching by offering various courses for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Presently 5 courses of 11 credit hours are being offered for UG programme including Rural Horticultural work experience where the final year UG students will be making field visits, conducting group discussion, method demonstration in farmer’s field and give suggestions related to plant protection to the farming community.
Various course manuals have been developed by the teaching faculty for better understanding of the information. Practical classes are conducted by exhibiting insect specimens and damaged plant parts to study the symptoms of damage caused by insects. Since inception of the PG programme, 46 students have been admitted of which five are ICAR students who have been admitted since from the year 2011-12.
The teaching faculty is guiding PG students on various research aspects in entomology viz., pest management, toxicology, biodiversity, etc. and priority is given for research from farmer’s point of view.
The department is well equipped with facilities like microscopes, insect rearing cages to enjoy and experience the biology of insects, BOD incubator, hot air oven, autoclave, laminar air flow chamber and apparatus for conducting dissection of insects, collecting, processing and preserving insects for study purposes.
Further, we are also having deep freezer and distilled water unit for the mass productions of bio control agents.
The department has a collection of more than 12,000 insect specimens that includes very rare and endemic insect specimens like leaf insect, stick insect, lucanid beetles, stag beetles, large sized butterflies, attractive butterflies, etc. which are stored in plenty of insect boxes and racks.
The department has the culture of conducting insect exhibitions many times a year in various parts of Karnataka, taking students for institutional visit, field visits to experience the world of insects and arranging for guest lectures by inviting renowned entomologists to educate students and faculty.
The department of Entomology actively participates in krishi mela by advising farmers on recommended plant protection measures and educating farmers by exhibiting the insects and damaged specimens. Importance has also been given for extension activities like visiting the farmer’s field, diagnosing and advising the recommended plant protection measures based on demand by farmers.
The department also takes up various staff research activities like evaluation of insecticides against insect pests in horticultural crops.
Relevant and sufficient text books and journals related to Entomology selected by the teaching faculty are made available for students through library
- To establish a highly successful graduate program with a national and international reputation.
- To guide students in their development as professionals in their chosen fields of entomology.
- To provide scientific basis for obtaining crop productivity by reducing pesticide usage and enhancing biological control practices and other eco friendly methodologies.
- To provide knowledge on Apiculture and Sericulture to the students in Skill Enhancement Courses thereby they can become a Entrepreneurs
- To develop IPM module for eco-friendly management of insect pests with minimal cost.
To impart the quality knowledge on insects ranging from fundamental aspects like morphology, physiology, Behavior, taxonomy and applied subjects like Integrated Pest Management, Apiculture, Sericulture and Lac Culture.
To be a leader in Entomological science by promoting quality education and multi disciplinary research in various fields of Entomology.
