The jurisdictional area of the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga is endowed with integrated farming situations involving Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Forestry. This provides a strong backdrop for ongoing educational programmes in the fields of Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry in the University at present and a justification for the proposed integration of veterinary and fisheries education also with this university in future.
University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga is the first Integrated University in the state of Karnataka which has both agricultural and horticultural sciences under its purview. The University is functioning from 21st September, 2012 through a Special Gazette notification of Karnataka Act No. 38 of 2012 and has come into independent existence with effect from 1st April, 2013. It has the operational jurisdiction in seven districts viz. Shivamogga, Davanagere, Chikkamagaluru, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Chitradurga.
The Educational Programme of the university consists of Undergraduate and Master’s programmes in Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry and Ph.D. programmes in five branches of Agriculture. It also consists of post matriculate two years Diploma (Agri.) programme. Though the University is newly formed (2013), the constituent Colleges were established almost 20-25 years ago are very well developed and have a reckoning at State and National levels.
These Colleges are well supported by well developed Agricultural and Horticultural Research Stations. One of the research station was established 100 years back and many others about 50-60 years ago.
The University is accredited by the ICAR during 2017. High quality education is provided, it is a fact that during its very first year of existence of the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga it has bagged third highest numbers of Junior Research Fellows in the country out of 45 Universities in the competitive examination conducted by ICAR, New Delhi. Twenty three Students have obtained JRF with fellowship, while nearly 60 students have cleared JRF without fellowship out of 120 Students appeared for the competitive examination from this university.
During 2016-17, about 64 students of this University have got ICAR JRF/Non JRF and SRF. Out of which 28 have got ICAR JRF, 35 Non JRF and 1 Non SRF. Mr. Nikhil H.N., student from College of Horticulture, Hiriyur has passed JRF examination with 1st rank at all India level. Mr. Girish B.R. student from College of Agriculture, Shivamogga has passed SRF examination with 16th rank.
The University was awarded 2nd prize for getting 9 JRF’s under Horticulture and Forestry Disciplines.
During the Academic year 2017-18, a total of 374 students have gained entrance to the different degree programmes of UAHS, Shivamogga through KEA, ICAR, NRI and Lateral Entries. For Diploma in Agriculture 70 students are admitted to the Diploma Colleges in Brahmavar and Kathalagere.
The University imparts education in Semester system having both internal and external evaluation. The University has adopted course curricula and syllabi as per ICAR Fifth Dean’s Committee recommendations with slight modifications. High emphasis is given to practical education through Experimental Learning and Rural Work Experience Programmes aiming at helping the graduates to become agricultural entrepreneurs rather than job seekers.
The College campuses are situated in rural areas providing agricultural education in real situation. Students coming out of this situation do not tend to get urbanized and feel comfortable to work in rural areas.
Adequate programmes on personality development and career guidance are also conducted. Career guidance and placement cells are established at University as well as college levels to help the students to secure good jobs.
The University Examination Centre which is responsible for conducting final external examinations and announcing of results for all the undergraduate courses in the university is functioning under this Directorate.
University Communication Centre and Kannada Studies Section are functioning under the Directorate of Education.
University Communication Centre (UCC) is a co-ordination body to help the UAHS Administration, Research, Teaching and Extension wings in respect of publications, Audio-visual Aids, Graphic, Artwork, Photographic and Printing work. This service of printing work is also provided by the Centre to various Departments of the University on request. The Communication Centre will bring out scientific journals, Periodicals and Newsletters of the University besides printing of annual report and convocation speech, University Calendar and the like.
Kannada Studies Section has the responsibility of bringing out books, bulletins and journals in Kannada for the benefit of the farmers and extension workers. It will also arrange for effective translation of latest scientific and semi-scientific literature available in English to Kannada language.
